FAQ

Is Hato Matcha ceremonial grade?

We do not use “ceremonial grade” as a quality label because there is no regulated standard behind the term. Instead, we focus on the details that tell you more about the tea itself, including origin, cultivar, harvest, shading, and processing.

Is Ujimidori good for matcha beginners?

Yes. Ujimidori is balanced, naturally sweet, and gentle in umami, making it an approachable matcha for anyone starting to make matcha at home.

Can I use Ujimidori for matcha lattes?

Yes. Ujimidori works well both as usucha and in a matcha latte. Its sweetness and gentle umami still come through when mixed with milk.

Why does matcha sometimes separate in dairy milk?

A little separation in a matcha latte made with dairy milk can be normal. Natural compounds in matcha can interact with milk proteins and create small flecks or separation. It does not mean the matcha or milk has gone bad, and it should not noticeably affect the taste. Stir before drinking, or use plant-based milk for a smoother texture.

How do I make matcha at home?

Sift 3g of matcha into a tea bowl. Add 30g of hot water at 75–80°C, then whisk in a W motion for about 1 minute, until a fine foam appears.

Enjoy as is, add more water for a longer drink, or pour over 90g of milk for a latte.

Do I need a bamboo whisk to make matcha?

A bamboo whisk, or chasen, is the traditional tool for making matcha and helps create a smooth texture and fine foam. It’s what we recommend for regular use, but it’s not a rule. A milk frother works too, or simply use whatever method you enjoy most.

How should I store matcha after opening?

Keep matcha tightly sealed and away from heat, light, moisture, and strong smells. Refrigerating opened matcha can help preserve its freshness, colour, and aroma. Let the tin return to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.

How long does matcha stay fresh after opening?

Matcha is best enjoyed fresh. For the best flavour, aroma, and colour, we recommend finishing an opened tin within a few weeks rather than keeping it for a special occasion.

Does matcha contain caffeine?

Yes. Matcha naturally contains caffeine, and the amount varies depending on the tea and serving size. For everyday drinking, we recommend using 3g of matcha per serving.

Is Hato Matcha sweetened or flavoured?

No. All Hato Matcha products carries pure Japanese matcha powder only, with no added sweeteners, flavours, or instant ingredients.

Why can matcha colour and taste vary between harvests?

Matcha is an agricultural product, so its colour, aroma, and flavour can vary slightly from harvest to harvest. Hato follows the harvest rather than trying to make every release taste exactly the same.

Will Ujimidori always be available?

Not necessarily. Hato releases matcha according to what is available from each harvest, so the range may change over time. When a release sells through, it may not return in exactly the same form.
